What's new: replying publicly to an Instagram comment — straight from the CRM
A comment under a post can now be closed two ways: answer publicly under the post, or move the conversation into Direct. Plus a fix for the bug where the business's own comments created phantom leads.
The classic social funnel looks like this: you answer publicly so everyone sees it, and you settle the details — price, availability, the order — in private. While the CRM could only do one of the two, the manager opened Instagram anyway, and the point of a single window disappeared.
The comment panel on a lead now has a reply-mode switch: "In Direct" sends a private message to whoever commented, "Publicly under the post" posts a threaded reply as your account. Both without leaving the CRM, with the history in the same thread.
What changed
A public reply in the thread
The reply is posted under the post as your account — where other buyers saw the question.
The private reply stays
The same switch sends a Direct message to the commenter: the standard answer-in-public, qualify-in-DM funnel.
No limit and no 7-day window
Unlike the private reply, a public one has no once-per-comment limit and is not bounded by seven days.
Fix: phantom leads
The account's own comments no longer create leads named after the business.
About those phantom leads — and how it happened
Comments your own account wrote — from the CRM, through the API, or by hand in the Instagram app — echoed back through the same comments webhook and were filed as new leads named after the business. So the harder a manager worked at replying, the more rubbish appeared in the lead list.
Self-authored comments are now filtered out, exactly as they always had been for Facebook Page comments. The same filter was present in one place and absent in another — which is precisely the asymmetry worth looking for first when a channel behaves strangely.
Facebook keeps the private reply for now
Public replies work for Instagram. Replying publicly as a Facebook Page requires a Meta permission (pages_manage_engagement) the app does not hold, so Facebook comment leads keep the private reply. That is a platform access boundary rather than unfinished work — once the permission is granted, the behaviour becomes identical.
Frequently asked
Who sees a public reply?
Everyone who sees the post: the reply is published in the comment thread as your account, like any ordinary Instagram reply.
Can I answer both publicly and in Direct?
Yes, and that is the typical flow: a short public answer for everyone, the details in private. A private reply to a specific comment is available once and within the window Meta sets; the public one has neither limit.
Who on the team can reply?
Anyone who may update a lead — the owner and managers. A viewer sees the thread but cannot send, exactly as on the lead page.
